The Christmas, er, capitalism spirit: kids sell old toys to get new ones

Sometimes even Santa needs a bailout.

According to a survey by marketing consultancy firm Just Kid Inc., one in four parents of kids aged 8-12 say their kids have considered selling their old toys in order to have money to pay for their presents this year; 11 percent say their kids have already sold some toys.

I guess the bad economy has been good for kids and the holidays in at least one way: it’s brought out children’s entrepreneurial spirits.

“That’s a substantial number of kids thinking of selling their own old toys,” Just Kid Inc. research director Michelle Poris told me during an interview. “The fact that it’s even on the table as an option was surprising to us.”

The Wall Street Journal has written a story about this phenomenon. Check it out here.

Have you been talking to your kids about the importance of saving and budgeting this holiday season? Tell us about it.
